Aneurysm - An Overview by MIOT Hospitals
Aneurysm is an abnormal bulge in any blood vessel of the body caused by disease or weakening of the vessel wall. Aneurysms in heart, called as Aortic Aneurysm, most commonly occur in the aorta which is the main blood vessel from the heart. As the size of an aneurysm increases, there is an increased risk of rupture, which can result in severe haemorrhage or other complications including sudden death.

The conventional treatment for aneurysm is a major operation which involves blood transfusions, use of heart-lung machine with a longer hospital stay and sometimes with associated complications.

Endovascular Stenting
Endovascular Stenting (or Endovascular Stent Grafting) is a new technique without Open Surgery. In the new procedure a keyhole is made in the groin under local anaesthesia and a tube graft is introduced and placed inside the aneurysm. Hence instead of traditional open surgery (where opening of chest or abdomen are normally required), this new technique can be safely done in vast majority of patients.

Advantages of Endovascular Stenting

  • After the procedure the patient can go home in about 3 day’s time.

  • There is no need for a blood transfusion or use of heart-lung machine.

This procedure is done by a group of experts consisting of cardiac surgeons, interventional radiologists and interventional cardiologists. For planning and performing this procedure, 64 Slice CT Scan, advanced scans, MRI, and Digital Cath lab is necessary.

METAA - MIOT’s Endovascular Training Centre For Aortic Aneurysms

Endovascular Stenting is done only in very few centers in the world and METAA at MIOT Hospitals in one such centre. MIOT Hospitals has a state-of-the-art infrastructure with dedicated doctors, highly sophisticated Cath Lab which is digitalized, facilities for road mapping and digital subtraction angiography, and best intensive care unit with well-trained paramedical personnel.

At METAA, MIOT surgeons have successfully treated more than 250 aortic aneurysms both surgically and with endovascular grafting. MIOT Hospitals also trains surgeons from all parts of South East Asia at this centre.

METAA has also been organizing Aortic Summit bi-anually, with the aim that the participants should be able to decide the best treatment for a given problem in aortic diseases, at the end of the summit. A LIVE Workshop on Minimally Invasive Valve Surgery (MIVS) is also scheduled in April, 2014, which provides unique opportunity to interact with the surgeons of international repute and detailed discussions on Mitral repair techniques.
